Her Story

The Choices She Made

Dr. Sudha Sinha completed her fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Tufts University, Boston — including a dedicated rotation at the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. She was triple-certified by American Boards before she turned thirty-five.

She chose to return. To Hyderabad. At a time when most of her peers in the US were building careers there, she came back to join MNJ Institute of Oncology — one of the largest government cancer centres in southern India — where patients could not afford to go anywhere else.

One of her first patients was a teenage boy with blood cancer. His family had no money. There was no system for children like him. She treated him anyway, drawing on every resource available — and she never forgot what it felt like to be the only person standing between a child and the disease.

That experience did not leave her. Over the next years at MNJ, she began to understand the scale of the problem — and in 2008, she founded IMPACT, deciding to solve it not one patient at a time, but through a structured programme.

"She could not turn him away."

A teenage boy with blood cancer. No money, no system, no options — except one doctor who stayed.

The path she chose

  • Returned to India despite offers to stay in the US
  • Chose a government hospital over a private career
  • Built a paediatric oncology programme where none existed
  • Founded IMPACT — free cancer care for every child who needs it

IMPACT

From 13 Beds to a Movement

"Thirteen beds. That was the beginning."

When Dr. Sinha founded IMPACT in 2008, there was no dedicated paediatric oncology facility in Hyderabad that offered free, comprehensive care. Children with cancer from families that could not pay were turned away or abandoned treatment halfway through. She started with a small unit inside MNJ, cobbled together with goodwill and determination.
