Newly Diagnosed With Cancer — What to Expect at Your First Appointment With Dr. Sinha

A cancer diagnosis is overwhelming. This guide tells you exactly how to prepare for your first appointment with Dr. Sudha Sinha — and what will happen when you walk in.

What to Bring

Try and bring everything in print. Not on your phone or WhatsApp.

  • Your biopsy report
  • All scans — CT, PET, MRI, ultrasound — printed films or a CD
  • Any blood reports from the past three to six months
  • A list of all medications you are currently taking
  • Any previous medical history relevant to your diagnosis

Tell Your Story in Your Own Words

When you sit down, Dr. Sinha will ask you to tell her what happened — from the beginning, in your own words.

Do not summarise. Do not skip the parts that seem unimportant. Tell it as it happened — the first symptom, when you noticed it, what you did, who you saw, what they told you, and what brought you here.

What Happens During the Consultation

Dr. Sinha will begin by acknowledging where you are. If you have been to many doctors already, that will be noted. After reviewing all your reports, Dr. Sinha will summarise what she understands — the diagnosis, what the reports show, and what they mean. Then comes the clinical examination and any specific questions about your symptoms and history.

Then comes the plan — with a sequence, a timeline, and a clear explanation of why each step is recommended.

Your Questions

There are no wrong questions in this consultation.

Some questions worth writing down before you come:

  • What exactly is my diagnosis — what type, what stage?
  • What is the treatment plan and why this sequence?
  • How long will treatment take?
  • What side effects should I expect and how will they be managed?
  • Who do I call if something feels wrong between appointments?

Write them down. Patients often forget questions the moment they sit in a consultation room — it is not anxiety, it is human.

What Are You Thinking?

Before the consultation ends, Dr. Sinha will ask: what are you thinking?

This gives you the space to say what you have not been able to say — the fear that has been sitting with you since the biopsy came back, the question you thought was too small to ask, the thing you cannot stop thinking about.

Say it. Nothing is too small.

Before You Leave

Before you leave, you should know three things: what the diagnosis is, what happens next, and how to reach us if something comes up before your next appointment.

Some answers will depend on further investigations — but you will always leave knowing what the next step is and why.
